In a dazzling display of grit and determination, Newark’s annual Dragon Boat Race saw a new and powerful contender this year – the town's very own women's rugby team, now proudly named the ‘Newark Scrumettes’.
Alongside colleagues from Access Accounts, these brave athletes took to the waters of the River Trent on September 17th with the same fierce spirit they bring to the rugby field.
While they may not have the same experience as some of the Dragon Boat Race veterans, their teamwork and enthusiasm proved to be a formidable combination
Competing against 34 other teams in three heats, the team powered through, even securing one race time speedier than that of the eventual winners!
Despite being newcomers to the event, the Scrumettes made an impressive showing.
Their participation not only showcased their versatility but also served as a reminder of the strength and determination of women in sports.
The team raised £1,347 for the two local charities supported by the event, Beaumond House Hospice and the Children’s Bereavement Centre. £300 of this came from an RFU grant secured by the Club for "Women and Girls' Summer Activity" designed to help the club grow and bond its women's team.
It certainly had the desired effect, with a day of team bonding, lots of laughs and even some passing drills and lineouts on display in the festival area to encourage others to come down to Kelham Road and give rugby a try.
Thanks from the Scrumettes to all at the club who supported this event.
