A Strong all round Colts performance

In ideal late summer conditions at Kelham Road, Newark Colts hosted our local friends Nottingham Corsairs for the first time this season, with a light breeze making it challenging for the kickers. Newark started strong, immediately gaining control with a dominant scrum that set the stage for Ollie Brewer to score the first try on the right wing, putting us ahead 5-0.
Corsairs, undeterred, responded quickly with a well-worked try of their own on the right wing, levelling the score at 5-5, with tough kicking conditions persisting for both sides. A clearance kick by Corsairs, battling against the wind, landed perfectly for Ollie Brewer, who secured Newark’s second try and his brace, pushing the score to 10-5.
As the game progressed, Newark's forwards began to assert their dominance, particularly in the set pieces. A secured ruck near halfway allowed the backs to overload the wing, leading to a burst of speed from Robbie Scoular, who scored a try that was converted by Charlie North, extending Newark’s lead to 17-5.
A lineout on Corsairs’ 5-meter line saw Newark stretch their lead further through a powerful run by Luke Fisher, followed by another successful conversion from North, making it 24-5.
The final points of the half went to Ollie Brewer, who, deep in Newark’s half, took an early lineout, broke through Corsairs’ defence, and won a lineout on their 5-metre line. From there, the ball was spread wide, allowing Ollie to finish the move and complete his hat-trick, closing the half at 29-5.
In the second half, Newark rotated their pack, while Corsairs showed renewed determination. Their efforts were rewarded with a second try, following a solid scrum and clearance kick, which fell perfectly for the chasing backs to score, with a conversion making it 29-12.
Newark responded immediately, with a 5-metre scrum leading to a try from the sprinting Len Coen, converted by Robbie Scoular, pushing the score to 36-12. The final points came from a strong run by Evan Marshall from halfway, despite a spirited final 30 minutes from Corsairs, aided by Newark forwards stepping in to cover due to Corsairs injuries. The match concluded with a hard-fought but entertaining victory for Newark, 41-12.
